Webinar: Teaching about peace amid religious and cultural conflict

Informit invites librarians and educators to a professional development webinar featuring special guest speaker Professor Peter Sherlock from Charles Sturt University in conversation with Pru Mitchell from the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

This session will explore how schools can effectively and respectfully address contentious issues related to religion and belief systems. Attendees will gain insights into how history can inform contemporary approaches to curriculum, as they promote religious literacy, foster intercultural understanding, and support inclusive teaching practices in increasingly diverse classrooms. The session will conclude by sharing practical strategies and curriculum resources that relate to the International Day of Peace, and considering how teachers and students can act now for a peaceful world.

Professor Peter Sherlock is the Associate Director of Yindyamarra Nguluway and Executive Director (acting) of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture at Charles Sturt University. He is a distinguished historian and theologian whose academic work focuses on the cultural and religious life of Renaissance and Reformation Europe. His research explores how communities remember and forget, especially the use of monuments and tombs in shaping historical consciousness, belonging and community. He is a leading expert in theological education and public engagement with religion in Australia, and from 2012 to 2024 was Foundation Vice-Chancellor of the University of Divinity.
